Baltimore City Archives
The Baltimore City Archives - in conjunction with the Maryland State Archives – is the central depository for government records of permanent value. The City Archives is pleased to host researchers, but due to staffing limitations, all visits must be by appointment.
Special Collections, Baltimore County Public Library
All aspects of life in Baltimore County for the last 130 years are contained in Legacy Web, a "digital collection" included in the Baltimore County Public Library's online catalog. Included are most aspects of rural living, including photographs of people, buildings, sites, and events in the Baltimore County area. Baltimore Museum of Industry
The archives at the Baltimore Museum of Industry house many historic documents that tell the stories of local businesses from conception to closing or modernization, and include companies with names familiar to generations of Baltimoreans. BMI makes its archives available for research by appointment and offers a variety of professional archival services.
Hays T. Watkins Research Library, Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum
The Hays T. Watkins Research Library was established in 1991 as part of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum, Inc. It is named for former Chessie System and CSX Chairman, Hays T. Watkins. Mr. Watkins, Chairman Emeritus of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum, oversaw the museum's transition to a nonprofit institution. The Hays T. Watkins Research Library is dedicated to the history and preservation of American railroading, emphasizing the legacy of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and other significant railroads located in Maryland such as the Western Maryland Railway, the Chessie System, and CSX Transportation.
Enoch Pratt Free Library Special Collections
The Maryland Department and Special Collections of the Enoch Pratt Free Library/State Library Resource Center preserve and provide access to unique and historic materials for all the citizens of Maryland. Our collections include photographs, etchings, prints and other lithographs showing Maryland and the city of Baltimore through the years. You can see more of our collections, as well as materials from institutions across the state, by visiting Maryland Digital Cultural Heritage, a collaborative, statewide digitization program headquartered at the Enoch Pratt Free Library.
Project Gado
Project Gado is an initiative to build an open source robotic scanner that small archives can use to digitize their photographic collections for less than $500. Project Gado is currently partnered with the archives at the Afro American Newspapers in Baltimore. Project Gado is sponsored by the Abell Foundation, the Johns Hopkins University Sheridan Libraries, and the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA).
Jewish Museum of Maryland
The Jewish Museum of Maryland has the largest single collection of regional Jewish Americana in the U.S. Our collections include works of art, historical photographs, clothing, ceremonial items, rare books, everyday objects, documents, oral histories, and memorabilia. The collections embody the story of Jewish life in Maryland - immigration, family history, business, congregational and organizational life, leisure, consumption, and contemporary culture.
Special Collections, H. Furlong Baldwin Library, Maryland Historical Society
The Maryland Historical Society was founded in 1844 and is the largest museum and library dedicated to the history of Maryland. Occupying an entire city block in the Mount Vernon district of Baltimore, the Society's mission is to "collection, preserve, and interpret the objects and materials that reflect Maryland's diverse cultural heritage." Starting in circa 1850, the photographic collection contains well over one million items including daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, cartes-de-visite, albumen prints, salted paper prints, acetate negatives, and more. Photographs are part of MdHS's Special Collections Department, H. Furlong Baldwin Library.
Special Collections, Langsdale Library, University of Baltimore
The Special Collections Department of Langsdale Library collects resources related to the making of the modern city of Baltimore. Our collections document the built environment, civic groups, public agencies, and nonprofit organizations from 20th century Baltimore City. Among our holdings are oral histories, photographs, architectural plans, and the papers of prominent Baltimore citizens. We are open to students, faculty, scholars, and the general public.
Special Collections, Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC)
The Special Collections Department of the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery collects, houses, preserves, and makes accessible materials that are original, rare, unique, fragile, historical, and archival. Their diverse collections of rare books, photographs, manuscripts, archives and artifacts are available for research use by faculty, students, visiting scholars and the general public. The Photography Collections contain 2 million images documenting the development of photography from daguerreotypes to digital imaging.
